Visit to Timour Hall Villa by Kenyan IPA Members

On Friday, 11 November, we received an email from Shuaib Adam, the Secretary General, 1st Vice President / Chairman of the newly re-established Kenyan IPA. He informed us that he would be traveling to Cape Town the following week along with 13 other Kenyan IPA members to attend an Anti Illicit Trade Conference sponsored by BAT/Interpol.  It was the first time that such a large group of serving police IPA Members had ever been given permission to travel abroad and although he apologised for the short notice, he asked if it would be possible to meet with local IPA members while they were here.

He further explained that the Kenyan Police Commissioner would like to revive their IPA activities and is willing to support them to the maximum. They are naturally very excited about this and hope to increase their membership to at least 10 000 to 15 000 members.  Towards this end, he expressed a desire to discuss close co-operation with our Section.

Naturally, we were only to happy to help and so plans were made to collect the 14 Kenyan IPA members and a guest of theirs, an IPA member from Mauritius, from their hotel and transport them to Timour Hall Villa on Wednesday 16 November to join us for a braai and meet with local members.

Our Secretary Piet Zaayman (in black) once again took charge of the braai as we all know that no-one can braai as well as he can! Earlier in the day, the other preparations for the evening, including 2 salads, garlic bread, pap and sous were handled by Jo Huysamen with some very welcome assistance from a visiting IPA member and guest in the Villa, Lappies Labuschagne, who kindly made a “small” pot of pap for the evening!

Soon it was time to collect our guests and although there were some delays at the hotel while all the delegates were rounded up, Jo and Chris Huysamen ensured that no visitor was left behind, although it took a rented combi, a car and a taxi to transport everyone!

Before long everyone was safely in the hands of Western Cape Chairman and host Deon Huysamen who took them all on a tour of the Villa, starting in the bar where they introduced themselves and were also introduced to other IPA members – both foreign and local! These included Ulli Gehring Secretary of West Coast Region along with Awie Schreuder (West Coast), Thormod & Marit Skogstad from Norway and Siegfried Strasen and his wife Maria who are visiting Cape Town from Germany.  A sprinkling of local Western Cape IPA members were also present.  It was such a pleasure to be able to show them around and also to be able to answer their questions regarding IPA and the operation of hospitality houses.  After the tour it was time to head to the function hall for dinner and some small presentations.  These included donations of flags from West Coast Region made to the Kenyan Deputy Police Commissioner and the IPA member from Mauritius.  In return, Ulli was presented with a small gift from Kenya.

Chris presented Shuaib with some IPA badges on behalf of Western Cape Region in order to provide them with something for their IPA members back home.  She also presented each visitor with an IPA badge and a leather keyring which features Timour Hall Villa and IPA logo on it.  Deon also received a small gift from the senior Deputy Police Chief and the final presentation was from our German IPA visitor Siegfried Strasen who gave them some German police memorabilia.

Finally, after a long and laughter filled evening, it was time to take them back to the hotel, secure in the knowledge that our guests had not only had a fantastic IPA experience, but that they would take back tales of their experiences to encourage other IPA members.  It was also especially rewarding to see that they were each proudly wearing their newly acquired IPA pin.

We would like to wish IPA Kenya all the best as they re-establish themselves and look forward to future visits.

1st Annual IPA Family Fun Day - 16 December 2010

To coincide with our 21st year at Timour Hall Villa, we are hosting our 1st Annual IPA Family Fun Day from 9am - 3pm on 16 December 2010.  Our aim is that the Family Fun Day will not only raise funds for the selected Charities, but also take on a festive atmosphere and provide entertainment and interest for every member of the family.  We intend to have jumping castles, horse & pony rides, a climbing wall, laser tag and more!  There are a number of area's where we are encouraging members of IPA and members of the public to join us and be more involved.  These are as follows:

Market Stalls & Car Boot Stalls

There will be stalls selling a variety of goods. There are still some spaces available, so if you would like to have a stall, please contact us for a booking form as soon as possible.  A small stall fee will be charged towards our fundraiser.

Family Entertainment

There will be an 11m climbing wall, laser tag, pony rides, jumping castles and demonstrations by the "bird guy" and the SAPS Dog Unit. If you have any suggestions or would like to  participate, please contact us as soon as possible.

The Charity for 2010

Our focus for 2010 is on our 4-legged friends and we are proud to announce that the Horse Protection Association has been selected as the charity recipient of the first Annual IPA Family Fun Day. Members of the public are also encouraged to donate food items for  both cats and dogs as well as blankets and horse or pony related items (such as tack).

Joint Function: IPA Western Cape & IPA West Coast

In August, a joint function was held with IPA West Coast in which a few presentations were made. These included presenting new members to their Region with their member cards as well as making cash donations to the newly established Blouberg Region as well as to a female member who participates in competitive angling. A presentation was also made from Ulli Gehring of West Coast to Deon Huysamen of Western Cape.  This took the form of a dvd copy of the original opening of Timour Hall Villa.

Western Cape also made a presentation at the meeting.  This was a donation of R3 000 to Adams Farm Home for use in securing a new computer for their office (pictured right).  The presentations were followed by a curry and rice evening and watching rugby in the bar.  All in all, it was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday among friends!

IPA Steak Braai - 21 May 2010

On Friday 21 May, we held the first of our ever popular Steak Braai's for 2010.  Members were treated to 330g steaks, salads, garlic bread, pap & sous for a bargain price and the event was a total success! Our usual braai master and region secretary, Piet Zaayman prepared the steak to mouthwatering perfection (even for those of us who are a bit fussy) and when the meal was dished, the only sounds in the hall, were the sounds of knives and forks against plates! The event was such a success, that those present requested that it be held at least once a month and the committee is only too happy to provide!  If you missed this one, you really missed out!!

Classic Car & Bike Show Charity Cheque Presentation

At 18:30 on Thursday 18 March 2010, IPA members, as well as representatives of several of the participating Car Clubs, convened in the conference room at Timour Hall Villa to attend a small function where cheques were presented to the beneficiaries of funds raised at the 10th Annual Classic Car & Bike Show, held on 23 & 24 January 2010.

After a short speech by the event organizer, Jo Huysamen, the floor was handed to the Chairman of IPA Western Cape, Mr Deon Huysamen who introduced the beneficiaries to those gathered and presented them with their donations.

The main beneficiary for the 2010 Show was The Chaeli Campaign who received a donation of R10 000. The volunteer team from Disaster Risk Management, who again so ably assisted with logistics at the event, received a donation of a generator and 2 safety lights as per their wish list and we were pleased when we were informed that these items were put to good use on the following evening (19 March) when they were called to assist at an accident scene! The final beneficiary of the evening, The South African Red Cross Society, received a donation of R1 500 for their donation of an ambulance and crew for the duration of the Car Show weekend.

After the presentations and speeches, guests were invited to join us in the bar where snacks had been provided.   Although the bar was open, coffee and tea was also available for those that wanted it and one of our Committee members, Martin Margolius, provided some home made wine which was a delicious end to the evening. The last of the guests left around 9pm after a social and very enjoyable evening.

On Saturday 20 March 2010, we hosted a Thank You “Bring & Braai” for volunteers who assisted us with the running of the Car Show over the course of the weekend of 23 & 24 January 2010.  Long before the original arranged start time of 5pm, attendees who were camping out arrived to pitch tents and by 5pm, many of the guests had already arrived, eager to spend an evening in pleasant camaraderie.

This function was by invitation only and guests included IPA members, local members of the community, volunteers who contacted us from the Car Show website as well as members of Disaster Risk Management, and our local SAPS reservists.

At the Car Show, some directed vehicles, many worked in the very popular and busy beer garden, but most sold tickets, standing for hours on end taking money and tying wristbands, answering questions and assisting the public as they flowed into the grounds.

In recognition of their invaluable contribution to the success of the event, the committee decided to provide a small selection of salads as well as garlic bread, pap and sous.  We also provided a piece of boerewors for each person attending the braai so that those who were unable to provide their own meat could still join us for the evening.

Several volunteers decided to camp out in the grounds overnight and tents were pitched.  The men joined us in the bar to watch the rugby while outside children played and wives relaxed.  Following the game, the braai fires were lit and while groups sat in the gathering twilight laughing and talking, committee members braaied the wors, before turning the coals over to families and friends to braai for themselves.  In the end, the evening lasted until gone 04:30am when the last of the campers succumbed to sleep and it was gone midday before the tents had all disappeared, families dispersed back to suburban homes.

In the end, a chilled evening where we could all sit and relax and celebrate the fantastic result of all our hard work was just what the doctor ordered and the small band of hard working men and women were already talking about “next year” and how much fun it is to be a part of something like this!
